BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s mayor and police commissioner promise a thorough investigation into the death of a man injured while in police custody.

At a news conference following the death Sunday of Freddie Gray, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said she has the same questions as reporters, including: how was Gray hurt? Did authorities follow proper procedures? What are the next steps?

The mayor said she will ensure the city holds “the right people accountable.”

Four officers stopped Gray a week ago and put him into a van. After Gray arrived at a police station, an ambulance was called to treat him. He was taken to a hospital with what relatives called spinal injuries.

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts says the case will be investigated by the department, an independent review board and the city prosecutor.
