Officers from several agencies took two people into custody and continue to search for a third after a Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy was shot after walking in on an armed robbery in KCK early Wednesday morning.
The off-duty deputy walked into the 7-Eleven near 44th and Shawnee Drive to get something to eat during an armed robbery just before 1:30 a.m. The suspects shot the deputy multiple times, and the deputy remains in critical condition at the hospital.
Police tell 41 Action News they believe this armed robbery is connected to two or possibly three others within the prior few hours. The first happened at about 10 p.m. Tuesday at a Shamrock gas station in the 8500 block of Woodland Avenue. The second happened at about 12:45 a.m. at a Phillips 66 near 79th and Wornall.
In all three robberies, three masked men showed a gun and demanded money.
During the robbery at Phillips 66, the suspects shot into the air. A bullet grazed one person’s hand. The clerk was hit in the face with a gun.
Officers said the suspects took off in a blue Ford Taurus, but they ditched it and kept moving. Police searched a neighborhood near 47th and Metropolitan ahead of 7 a.m. They took two people into custody at 47th and Ruby at about 6:55 a.m.
The nearby Turner School District said it notified parents about the situation and started classes on time.
