We perish because we know not… #TLENews
Chipotle’s Twitter feed took an unsavory turn early Sunday when hackers seized control of the account and tweeted a string of slur- and profanity-laced messages.
The hackers changed the Mexican restaurant chain’s avatar to a swastika and sent out offensive tweets calling President Obama the N-word and targeting U.S. government agencies, according to The Daily Dot.
Another now-deleted tweet claimed that the burrito chain could be closing all of its restaurants by the end of 2015 because Twitter user @TheCeltic666 “poisoned” the meat supply.
Chipotle regained control of the account a few hours later. The chain has since cleaned up its feed and apologized for the tweets.
“Our Twitter account was hijacked overnight for about two hours, during which a series of offensive tweets was posted to the account,” a Chipotle spokesman told the Daily News. “We apologize for the nature of the posts that were made during that time, and we are now conducting an investigation to try to determine what happened and who might have been involved.”
The chain also tweeted an apology, saying it had been “unfortunately hijacked temporarily.”
Chipotle’s account has about 631,000 followers.
The company faked a hacking of its account in 2013 as a publicity stunt for its 20th anniversary campaign. Those bizarre tweets included “Find avocado store in Arvada, Colorado.”
