The United States Geological Survey recorded a minor earthquake Sunday evening a short distance outside the Downingtown borough.
The federal agency, which monitors and records seismic activity across the country, identified the 2.7 magnitude quake around 6:25 p.m. The Chester County Department of Emergency Services confirmed the USGS and notified local officials of the activity shortly after it was recorded.
According to USGS data the earthquake occurred about 2 miles south east of Downingtown and about four miles northwest of West Chester.
Local officials said the quake, which was felt by some in the southeastern sections of the Downingtown borough, caused no damage in the area.
A house fire on Piedmont Avenue in West Bradford that started after a propane heater malfunctioned inside a garage was unrelated, according to West Bradford Fire Chief Jack Law. The fire started after the heater caught fire and caused minimal damage to the garage, Law said.
