Israel shuts down airspace over the Golan Heights, ordering civil aircraft to stay out of the area, following the strike that killed six Iranian military officials and six Hezbollah men.
Israel has reportedly deployed an Iron Dome battery in the north near its border with Lebanon amid the heightened tensions following an attack inside Syria on Sunday that was attributed to Israel, Sky News said on Monday.
Also Monday, Israel shut down its airspace over the Golan Heights, ordering civil aircraft to stay out of the area, following the strike that killed six Iranian military officials and six Hezbollah men.
The six Iranians include Gen. Mohammad Allahdadi, whom the Revolutionary Guard said was serving as an adviser to the Syrian army.
One of the Hezbollah operatives killed was Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of slain Hezbollah leader Imad Mughniyeh, who was assassinated in Damascus in 2008. It is widely believe that Israel planted the car bomb that killed him.
A Hezbollah source told Lebanese reporters on Monday that Sunday’s attack on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights was proof of Israeli involvement in the crisis in Syria. He added that the attack would have a dramatic effect on the region as far as interests andpower struggles are concerned.
Lebanese journalist Ali al-Amin, who has close ties to decision-makers in the Shi’ite organization and the Lebanese government, said in an interview on Nazareth’s Ashams radio station Monday that Lebanese officials believed Hezbollah would respond, but that at this stage the response would be a measured one since the organization is aware of its limitations due to the ongoing war in Syria.
High-ranking Lebanese officials held consultations Sunday about the possibility of escalation on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon if Hezbollah should decide to respond to the assassination of its operatives.
